SANDY SPRINGS, GA — The Animal Hospital of Sandy Springs has come to the aid of a dog that suffered fractures to both forelimbs during an accident, and is asking the community to help cover the cost of the pup’s surgery. The campaign will pay for the surgery required for Dallas, a one-year-old Borzoi, to lead a healthy and happy life.
Animal hospital Dr. Ella Ahearn said it appears Dallas was running and fell into a hole, which resulted in him sustaining serious fractures in both forelimbs. As a big dog with “tiny bones,” that type of break was unsurprising.
“It’s not unheard of that they will do that,” she said, referencing Dallas’s breed. According to American Kennel Club, Borzois, known in America as Russian Wolfhounds before 1936, were originally bred by Russian aristocrats for hundreds of years.
Dallas was brought to the hospital where his owners were told he would need orthopedic surgery to repair his limbs. Understandably, the owners were unable to provide the resources to pay a roughly $7,000 veterinary bill and thought euthanasia was their only option, Dr. Ahearn said.
However, the hospital wasn’t ready to give up on Dallas, so the staff offered to take ownership of the pup, raise money for his medical needs and provide him a new forever home. The owners agreed and Dallas went under the knife on Monday, the doctor said. He received new plates on both legs and his limbs are covered in casts and splints to allow for healing. Dr. Ahearn said she expects him to take about 12 weeks to recover.
